The Reefs was very fortunate and honored to participate in a great event last week organized and inspired by Phil Keoghan, host of the CBS show The Amazing Race. Dubbed “The Ultimate Bermuda Experience” and sponsored in part by Mr. Keoghan’s energy bar NOW, four lucky couples won a sweepstakes to fly to Bermuda, stay with us here at The Reefs, and compete in an activity filled experience around the island.

In the theme of The Amazing Race, they rode mopeds, kayaked, rode jet skis, had a rum cake eating competition and ended the event at The Commissioner’s House at the Maritime Museum in the Royal Naval Dockyard.

Although it was all in good fun and everyone was a winner, the official winner and big congratulations went to Joy McDaniel from New Mexico. The contestants spent the next few days as our guests and got to spend time relaxing and recovering from their busy day!

In addition, Mr. Keoghan brought his women’s cycling team, NOW and Novartis for MS, with him to Bermuda where they spent many hours training on Bermuda’s windy and hilly roads. His team helps in raising money for multiple sclerosis and while here put on a gala which raised over $24,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Bermuda.

New Honors to Ring in the New Year

The staff members at The Reefs are welcoming in the New Year with even bigger smiles. Our Bermuda resort was named among the best in the world by both Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines.

2012 Gold List

In the January edition of Condé Nast Traveler, The Reefs was honored on the 2012 Gold List as the No. 3 resort in the Caribbean and Atlantic. Our score of 94.9 earned us the top spot in Bermuda.

In addition, The Reefs was named to the Platinum Circle of “Gold List superstars” for being on the Gold List for the past five years in a row. In fact, this makes our 16th consecutive appearance on the Gold List.

T+L 500

Travel + Leisure recently announced the 2012 T+L 500 List. The Reefs was named among the Best in the Caribbean / Atlantic and the only resort in Bermuda to be featured. This is The Reefs’ 9th time on the list.

New Bathrooms, Low Club Condo Rates

We are pleased to announce that we will begin the first phase of bathroom renovations this winter. This project will include several Cliffside rooms and is expected to be completed by early spring.

Renovation details

Here is what you can expect to find in our renovated Cliffside rooms.

Larger, more open bathrooms – The wall between the vanity and bathroom will be knocked down to make for one large room.
Upscale vanity area – A new dark, hard-wood vanity will be installed across from the closet doors, which will still have floor-to-ceiling mirrors.
Walk-in rain showers – Bathtubs will be replaced with large, walk-in rain showers. A neutral stone tile, similar to the Club Condo bathrooms, will be used throughout.
Attention to detail – A mosaic tile accent wall will nicely compliment new countertops and bathroom fixtures.

Changes to winter travel

To allow for these renovations to take place with as minimal disruption to guests as possible, the hotel accommodations and restaurants will be closed from January 3 to March 15. This brief closure will also allow us to make some improvements to our main kitchen that serves Ocean Echo and Royston's.

Club Condo availability

If you want to escape to The Reefs from what is starting to look like a long and cold winter, the Club Condos and La Serena Spa will still be open and are a quick getaway. In fact, this winter 2 guests can stay in a 2-bedroom luxury Club Condo for just $299 a night or 4 guests can stay for just $399 a night. Or, 6 guests can stay in a 3-bedroom Club Condo with 2,500 square feet of living space for $499 a night.

The Club concierge will be here all winter long to ensure you have a relaxing stay and can even handle your pre-arrival grocery shopping.

Meet our therapists - Alet and Fiona

Alet

Originally from South Africa, Alet has been a therapist at La Serena Spa for two years. Her passion is facials as she is highly knowledgeable in Skin Analysis.

She has a passion for cooking and is always trying to learn more. She learned to cook Thai food while living in Thailand teaching English for four months in 2008. An avid traveler, Alet has been to 13 countries in the past four years and looks forward to her next trip to the Galápagos Islands.

When she is not in the Spa she loves to be outdoors relaxing on Bermuda's beautiful beaches or on her boyfriend's boat. She often goes swimming with the Tiger Sharks during the summer.

As summer is coming to an end, Alet recommends you try the Tri-Enzyme Facial. It will help to get rid of the skin build up and pigmentation by smoothing out your skin for an amazing healthy glow.

Fiona

Bermudian therapist Fiona joined our spa team in April 2011. She is originally a marine biologist after finishing her Masters degree in Fisheries Ecology in Wales.

While in Wales she took a course in Aromatherapy and Reflexology. She loved it so much she undertook further training in England and France expanding her knowledge base by learning about new treatments such as Reiki, Massage, Nutrition, Emotrance and Hot stones. She knew she had found her calling so she swapped careers — from fish back to people.

With more than 19 years of spa experience, Fiona brings a holistic approach to all her treatments. One treatment she is passionate about is Reflexology — an ancient and powerful treatment which uses massage and applying gentle pressure to reflex points on the feet. Fiona has seen so many great results over the years with reflexology bringing benefits in relieving stress-related disorders as well as hormonal imbalances, infertility, irritable bowl, back pain, headaches and improving energy levels. Reiki is another favorite as it, along with reflexology, can help you change old patterns and find inner balance and vitality.

Hotel Olympians Earn Silver Medals

As if Harbour Nights in Hamilton isn't exciting enough, last night the entertainment was the "Hotel Olympics."

The Reefs entered Richard Kyaruzi in the Waiter’s race and Winfield Todd in the Bellman’s race.

The Waiter’s race consisted of running down to a series of tables, setting the table for the guests, opening a bottle of wine, pouring two glasses, and then running with the glasses on a tray back to the starting point.

The Bellman’s race consisted of running down to a bellman’s stand, putting on your bellman shirt, packing 8 towels into two suitcases, and then running with the suitcases back to the start.

Winfield placed 2nd out of 8, beating a considerable amount of young guys, not bad for a guy in his 70’s! Richard also placed 2nd in the Waiter’s race.

Plenty of Reefs staff came out to cheer them on for the exciting performance of hotel sports!

Recipe for Chocolate Coconut Truffle with Banana Caramel Custard

A decadent dessert that is sure to be the hit of any dinner party! Follow three simple recipes below to make a Banana Caramel Custard that is topped with coconut truffels and a sinful caramel rum sauce. Enjoy!

Banana Cream Caramel

Ingredients

500 grams sugar

1 pint water

2 liters milk
30 grams banana puree
1 vanilla pod split
5 whole eggs
5 egg yolks
220 grams sugar

Directions

Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C)
Bring sugar and water to boil. Cook until it reaches caramel stage.
In a saucepan over medium heat bring milk to boil. Remove from heat.
Add banana puree and vanilla pod. Let sit 10 minutes until infused. Strain.
In a large bowl whisk together eggs, yolks and sugar. Gradually add the hot milk mixture.
Add caramel mixture and strain
Put in 14 dariole moulds and bake in a water bath until set – approx 35 mins.Cool and chill.

Chocolate Coconut Truffle

Ingredients
7 egg yolks
85 grams sugar
180 grams melted chocolate
475 ml heavy cream
Roasted coconut flakes

Directions
In a bowl whisk together yolks and sugar until creamy. Whisk in melted chocolate. Fold in cream. Chill for 4 hours. Scoop out small balls of the truffle mixture and freeze until firm. Roll in coconut and refrigerate until needed.

Caramel Rum Sauce

Ingredients
300 grams sugar
60 ml water
120 ml heavy cream
60 ml dark rum

Directions
Combine sugar and water in a heavy base pan and cook on high heat until golden. Remove from heat and slowly stir in cream until smooth. Let cool.

To assemble
Unmold the caramel cream from the molds. Sandwich with thin sliced banana.
Arrange sliced banana on top, sprinkle with sugar and caramelize with heat torch.

The Sheroff's first visit to Bermuda since 1979 proved to be very eventful for the entire family

Mary and Robert Sheroff honeymooned in Bermuda at Elbow Beach 32 years ago. Back for the first time since 1979, the Sheroff's arrived last Saturday, July 30 with their 3 children and their oldest son's girlfriend and stayed in a 3 bedroom Club Suite.

On Tuesday the Sheroff's toured The Club to learn about the ownership benefits and later decided to become our newest owners!

Tuesday evening, the Sheroff's oldest son Matthew took his high school sweetheart Amanda up to Gibb's Lighthouse and proposed. She said YES!

Originally from Surry, England, Natalie has been in Bermuda for more than three years and joined La Serena Spa in May 2011. Before moving to Bermuda, she ran her own Elemis Spa in London for 15 years. She is very excited that La Serena offers Elemis treatments and products, which she feels is the leading spa brand.

She’s lived in Bermuda for the past three years and most recently worked at the Thai Shop in Hamilton. In addition to Thai massages, she also enjoys providing Swedish and Sports massages as well as facials.

Vara is currently taking English classes so that she can better communicate with her La Serena Spa clients. Her clients already find her warm smile reassuring and leave feeling completely relaxed after one of her Thai massages!

Top names in golf go head-to-head in Bermuda

Ken and Beth Wilson renewed their vows on their 10th anniversary

Congratulations to Ken and Beth Wilson of Atlanta, Georgia, who just celebrated 10 years of marriage at The Reefs.

Like many couples, The Reefs is a special place for Ken and Beth. Immediately after their wedding, Ken and Beth began their new life together with a romantic honeymoon at The Reefs. Just five days into their stay, Ken surprised Beth with a vow renewal on Caso’s Point.

Ken walked Beth down to the deck perched above the Atlantic. Greeting them was a minister that Ken had asked to perform the ceremony. When Beth realized what was going on, she burst into tears – and of course, said “I do” again.

The Wilson’s have returned to The Reefs six times since their honeymoon and always have the most difficult time leaving. After their first stay, it took them a long time to get into the taxi because they kept walking back to the patio to look out at the beach and ocean. When the couple finally sat down in the taxi, their taxi driver noticed tears in their eyes and he started passing tissues back to them.

The most recent time they visited, they had that same taxi driver. He must have recognized them immediately because when they got into his taxi he passed the box of tissues back to them.

This past weekend, Ken and Beth returned for their 6th visit to celebrate their 10th anniversary with another vow renewal. They renewed their love and commitment to each other on a beautiful Friday evening at Caso’s Point – where they had 10 years before.

Colbert Wins The Reefs' Challenge

Last month, David Dodwell challenged comedian Stephen Colbert to beat his (less-than-impressive) ranking in the previous Charleston Bermuda Race in this year’s much-anticipated sailing event.

Colbert accepted the challenge, and won. In fact, Colbert and his crew almost took 1st place in the biennial sailing race across the Atlantic Ocean.

It was a close finish between Colbert’s vessel, The Spirit of Juno, and the Tucana. In the end, after 777 miles, The Spirit of Juno couldn’t gather enough speed to catch Tucana.

The impressive 2nd place standing earned Colbert bragging rights, as the “second greatest sailor in the world,” and a stay in one of The Reefs’ spacious Club Suites.

Colbert collected from David Dodwell on the challenge upon arriving in Bermuda. After a grueling week at sea, The Reefs was an ideal spot for Colbert to enjoy some much-needed “R&R” with his family.

Bring a piece of Bermuda home with you

Winfield Todd, one of our beloved Bellmen, loves giving our guests a signature piece of our island to bring back home.

Bring an empty spice jar to Bermuda with you and Winfield will fill it up with pink sand from Warwick Long Bay Beach on South Shore.

He tries to give a bottle of pink sand to as many guests as he can as they are leaving the hotel. He also gives two postcards — one a photo of Warwick Long Bay Beach where he collects the sand, and the other a photo of Johnny Barnes.

This local Bermudian stands every morning at Crow Lane roundabout from 5 to 10 a.m. waving to everyone on their way to work. Sometimes called "the friendliest man in Bermuda," a statue was erected in that roundabout in his honor. Just another example of the friendly people of Bermuda.

Why is Bermuda's sand pink?

It isn’t crushed coral as many people assume, although there are bits of coral in the sand. The pink crystals are actually the pink and red shells of microscopic insects, foraminifera, one of the most abundant single-cell organisms in the ocean.

The foraminifera live on the underside of reefs and the sea floor. When they die, the currents offshore smash their shells and they tumble onto Bermuda’s beaches with each lapping wave.

Cavemen biking the Bermuda End-to-End

On Saturday, May 7, 2011 our Resort Manager David Dodwell, Jr. biked from one end of Bermuda to the other — dressed as a caveman!

David and a group of 16 of his friends dressed up as 16 cavemen chasing a sabretooth tiger. His team raised over $20,000 for the event — the largest group total.

About the Bermuda End-to-End

The 24th Annual End-to-End took place on Saturday, May 7, 2011. The island's biggest fundraising event is a 24.1 miles race from King's Square in St. George to Dockyard.

2,500 people took part in the 2011 event overall, amongst all the different options — walking, cycling, swimming, kayaking and horseback riding.

Funds raised in the 2011 event support the Meals on Wheels, The Family Centre, Windreach, Friends of Hospice, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Bermuda, Lady Cubitt Compassionate Association, Caron, the Bermuda Duke of Edinburgh Award, Raleigh International, Bermuda Sea Cadets, and the Bermuda National Gallery.

Meet Samantha, our Reiki master

Samantha joined the La Serena Spa team all the way from South Wales, UK. An avid traveler and mystical dreamer at heart, Samantha finds Bermuda to be one of the most enchanting and mystical islands that she has visited.

"There is not a day that passes by at La Serena that doesn’t take my breath away. The ambiance is magical, a presence that you clearly will not find at any other spas on the island,” says Samantha. “You really have to experience the 'spa journey' to feel its wondrous beauty.

Samantha is trained as a Spa Therapist, which means she can provide any treatment available at La Serena. She takes a holistic approach in her treatments with a keen and passionate understanding of the higher realms of well-being. This passion for alternative and energetic healing led her to seek knowledge about Reiki, a new age medicine.

The yoga classes are held each Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and are complimentary for hotel guests. You may reserve your yoga mat by signing up at the front desk earlier in the day.

The Reefs’ yoga classes will be held throughout the summer, ending in late September.

Led by Bermuda Ashtanga expert and instructor Peter Rehmer, the weekly Essentially Easy Ashtanga Yoga classes are ideal for every yoga level including beginners. The class format is a kinder, gentler form of Ashtanga yoga. With each guided yoga pose, participants focus on their gaze and breathing to calm the mind, and bring a deep relaxation.

Sandboni arrives at The Reefs!

Every morning bright and early our beach attendants are out cleaning the beach of seaweed. After all, we want to provide a pristine pink sand beach on which you can relax!

For the past 2 years they’ve had to hand rake the beach since our tractor stopped working. But as of April 14 and the arrival of our new Kubota tractor, we can now clean the beach much easier and more effectively!

We held a "tractor wetting" ceremony to christen the arrival of the new tractor which we have named Sandboni. (It is a Bermuda tradition to pour a bottle of Goslings Black Seal Rum on the roof of a new structure, known as a "roof wetting" ceremony.)

You watch see the beach boys cleaning the beach each morning around 7 or 7:30. Be sure to let them know what a great job they’re doing when you see them!

New brochure in the works

Since we updated our website last January, we decided it was about time we created a new brochure, too. There are new pictures of the restaurants since they were renovated, La Serena Spa and the Club Suites.

We took a field trip to visit the printer this morning to check on the brochure as it came off the line. Here are Pat Wilcoz, Debbie McBride and Vince showing the front and back cover of the brochure with the huge printer in the background.

Meet our Manicurist, Ana

Your nails are in excellent care with Ana. She’s famous on island, after being named “The Best Manicurist and Pedicurist in Bermuda” by The Bermudian magazine.

Born in Armenia, Ana moved to the United States with her family and lived in Los Angeles, California, for 20 years before joining La Serena Spa.

She has now been at La Serena for seven years, and considers it the best spa she has had the pleasure of working at. During her time here, she has seen La Serena transform from a small facility close to The Reefs’ entrance to the beautiful, open spa we have now.

With the new, larger spa, we more than doubled our therapists — from just four therapists to 10 — and the expertise you receive. Each therapist has her own specialty, and it’s exciting to see the new ideas and treatments being added to the menu.

Most recently, Ana has fallen in love with the new Warm Bamboo Massage. Fellow spa therapist, Karen, who recently joined La Serena brought the treatment knowledge with her. “Our clients absolutely love it! It really gets deep into the muscles, but is relaxing at the same time. I would have one every day if I could, it is a must have at the spa!”

Ana loves that she has the best ocean view room in the world to work from and share with clients while they are being pampered with Elemis Products.

Her favorite? “I am in love with the Exotic Frangipani Moisture Melt and the Skin Nourishing Milk Bath. I just cannot live without them. The best part is that they can be used in so many different ways — as an oil, hair treatment, lotion. The list goes on and on, and they’re great for anyone!”

Personal training on vacation

Who says you can't continue your fitness regimen while on vacation? We don't!

The Reefs now has a personal trainer, Graham Frith, who you can schedule time with when you stay in a Club Suite. He will coordinate with your trainer back home to make sure you continue to work toward your fitness goals.

Graham has a National Academy of Sports Medicine certification (NASM) for personal training and a degree in Exercise Science and Sports Studies from the University of Tampa. He currently works at Positive Results in Hamilton and was previously at Magnum Power Force Gym in Hamilton for 4 1/2 years.

Graham looks forward to helping you work toward your fitness goals.

Bermuda beckons Colbert

Comedy Central comedian Stephen Colbert, host of the Colbert Report, will sail to Bermuda this spring in the Charleston Bermuda Race.

Colbert will set sail on May 21 with friends and fellow sailors from Charleston, South Carolina.

Colbert, a native of Charleston, said on the race's official website: "The ocean has had a free ride for too long. Well, it has to deal with me now. Brace yourself, Atlantic!"

Well, Stephen, we are ready for your arrival and have a special offer for you! If Colbert wins the race, we will give away a free 5-night stay that Colbert can give away to whomever he please.

The Charleston Bermuda Race, presented by OnDeck in partnership with the South Carolina Maritime Foundation (SCMF) and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC), is one of the most challenging races in the Western hemisphere.

Magician makes a tiger magically appear on stage

From February 25 to March 6 Magician Rick Thomas performed his Vegas show at the Fairmont Southampton with the help of his white tiger Chaos. This is the first time a white tiger has been in Bermuda.

As an added bonus, Rick invited the audience to join him and the tiger on stage for the ultimate tiger encounter.

The Tony Bari Duo was the opening act for three nights out of the 9 night event. Tony Bari is a popular pianist who has been playing at The Reefs since 1984.

A dozen bluebirds

Spring is just around the corner — the arrival of the Eastern Bluebird proves it!

The Eastern Bluebird Sialia sialia is a native species to Bermuda — the only location outside North America where this species breeds.

Before man first settled in 1609, forest growth dominated the landscape. Bluebirds fed on coastal grasslands, nesting in old cedars and cliff cavities. However, in the last 50 years, the bluebirds have been pressured to find suitable nest-sites.

But with the help of the Bermuda Audubon Society great efforts have been made to halt the decline in bluebird numbers. Efforts have been made to educate the public and hundreds of bluebird nestboxes have been erected around Bermuda.

The current population of bluebirds in Bermuda is estimated to be about 500. The bluebird is now totally dependent on artificial nestboxes for breeding success and its survival in Bermuda can only be guaranteed with human help.

Originally from New York City, Jason Koppinger attended The Culinary Institute of America, The French Culinary Institute and the Disney Institute.

Before moving to Hawaii in 2003, he served as Executive Chef for Royal Caribbean International. He has worked throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, New York, Florida, Hawaii and the South Pacific.

Most recently in the Cayman Islands as Executive Chef at the Westin Casuarinas Resort and Spa, Jason became the youngest chef in the United States to earn his Certified Master Chef (CMC) and Certified Culinary Educator (CCE) designations from the American Culinary Foundation (ACF) and is a member of The Chaîne Des Rôtisseurs.

Jason has appeared on the Food Network television series Iron Chef America alongside Bobby Flay in "Battle Broccoli" as well as Chopped.

Now in Bermuda at The Reefs Hotel & Club, Jason will inject his unique style and blend of various and diverse countries into the properties three restaurants. Heavily influenced by Asian, and Mediterranean ingredients finished with French technique, the menus promise to be nothing like Bermuda has seen or tasted before!

This morning it was announced by PGA of America that the PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be held in Bermuda the next two years.

Tourism Minister Patrice Minors says, “Bermuda is thrilled to once again be hosting the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. In the past four years, our relationship with The PGA of America is one that has grown from strength to strength, and we are pleased that we are continuing this special partnership."

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a tournament between the winners of the following major championships:

The Masters, April 7-10, at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
111th U.S. Open Championship, June 16-19, at Congressional Country Club in Potomac, Md.

David Dodwell, Hotelier of the Year

Recognized for his outstanding achievements at Nisbet Plantation, Dodwell received the award in front of an international audience of hospitality leaders and tourism officials at the 2011 Caribbean Marketplace in Jamaica. He becomes the 33rd recipient of the distinguished golden conch shell and joins an elite list of the most accomplished hotel leaders in the Caribbean.

The Reefs' Bread and Butter Pudding

Try out this recipe for one of the holiday favorites on The Reefs' menu.

Ingredients:

10 slices bread, cut into cubes
2 Tablespoons butter plus extra to grease pie dish
4 Tablespoons golden raisins
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Nutmeg to taste
1½ cups milk
3 Tablespoons heavy cream
4 whole eggs
2 Tablespoons brown sugar

Directions:

Grease 9" pie dish with butter.
Gently warm 2T butter, cinnamon and nutmeg in a pan on low heat. Do not boil. Let the mixture cool.
Crack eggs into bowl, beat lightly.
Mix the cream and brown sugar in a separate bowl.
Add the eggs to the cream and sugar mixture. Beat well.
Add butter mixture to the cream mixture.
Place the bread and raisins in the pie mold.
Pour the custard mixture over the bread and mix well.
Preheat oven to 350°F
Place the dish in the oven and bake for 30-40 minutes until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
Serve warm with vanilla sauce.

To start out the New Year on the right foot, The Reefs Hotel & Club has officially agreed to host the Bermuda 100-day Challenge (BODC), a nationally televised 100-day weight loss competition (bermuda100daychallenge.com).

The challenge will commence on January 24 and will run through May 10, 2011. The contestants are a diverse makeup from the community, that range from ordinary people to celebrities. The challenge consists of thirteen, 2-hour weekend boot camps which are hosted around the island at luxurious locations.

In addition to hosting three of the weekend boot camps, The Reefs Hotel & Club will also host 4 contestant panel nights on February 7, March 7, April 11 and May 4.

Farewell to Two Long-time Employees

Two of our wonderful housekeepers, Cynthia Simons and Patricia Atkins, have just retired at the end of November. Cynthia (left) was Executive Housekeeper retiring after almost 29 years and Pat (right) retired as Housekeeping Supervisor after 26 years.

We are sad to see them go but are very grateful they have spent so many years with us.

Results of Igor

What was once a Category 4 hurricane with a projected path directly toward our tiny island, Hurricane Igor thankfully brought much less damage than was anticipated. Igor was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane early Sunday morning but still brought howling winds, horizontal rain and huge waves.

It was quite a sight to see the waves crashing over Caso's Point and Coconuts restaurant. As Igor moved closer to Bermuda, we moved all guests to Club residences.

Since Bermuda had several days notice of the storm's arrival, everyone was well prepared for the worst.

There was some erosion of our beach, we lost a few railings and deck planking at Coconuts and Caso's Point, and have some minor damage at the portico entrance.

Fox News reporter Rick Leventhal broadcasted live directly from a residence at The Reefs Club, keeping everyone informed of the latest news on Hurricane Igor.

While the worst is behind us, much of the island is still without power. But most importantly, Igor was nowhere near as destructive as Fabian in 2003 and police are reporting no serious injuries or fatalities. Something we are all thankful for.

A Finnegan Follow-up

Even 42 years after their honeymoon at The Reefs, Jack and Barbara Finnegan still talk about the fond memories they had. So their son, Tim, entered his story in The Reefs Show Your Love contest in February in the hopes he could send his parents back to Bermuda.

Well his story won the hearts of our voters and he graciously gave his winning stay to his parents so they could enjoy a much deserved vacation.

After their return home, the Finnegan's shared their kind thanks with us.

Two years ago Coach Bob McKillop of the Davidson basketball team and his wife Kathy spent a relaxing week at our sister resort on Nevis, Nisbet Plantation. It was a much deserved break after tiny Davidson defeated powerhouses Gonzaga, Georgetown and Wisconsin in the 2008 NCAA March Madness Championship.

This year they escaped to The Reefs for a fun family vacation.

Just announced: this year's Bermuda Music Festival will feature multi-Grammy winning performer and producer Ziggy Marley and five-time Grammy award-winning artist Toni Braxton!

From September 30 to October 2, 2010, the 15th annual Bermuda Music Festival will take place at the Fairmont Southampton and will have the whole island buzzing with the sounds of A-list artists.

The fun beings on Thursday, September 30 when Ziggy Marley takes the stage. He earned his fourth Grammy in 2006 for “Love is My Religion” and most recently released his “Family Time” album.

On Friday evening, Southern gospel singer Angie Stone and upcoming UK talent Estelle take the stage. Be sure not to miss Saturday evening's performance, when Toni Braxton, a five-time Grammy award-winning artist, concludes the festival. Braxton distinguished herself with her most popular hit, “Un-Break My Heart,” and recently competed in ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”.

Impressive paintings of The Reefs

Greetings to The Reefs,

I just wanted to thank you for the graciousness shown to my father and me on a recent stop in June. My parents had stayed at your hotel several times over the years. My mother passed away in March, following a long illness. I had been her caretaker over some difficult years. She wanted two things for me. She made me promise to take a cruise after she died and she wanted me to start painting again, something I couldn't do much of in the years I took care of her.

My father accompanied me to Bermuda. He insisted that we stop at The Reefs, so he could show me what a beautiful place it is. The young woman at the front desk invited us to wander around, and my father pointed out many of my parents' favorite spots at the hotel. The colors, architecture, and landscape of The Reefs were truly inspiring, and it helped me fulfill my mother's hope that I would paint again.

I thought you'd enjoy seeing a couple of the canvases that resulted from that visit. It was very healing, for both my father and me, to be in a place my mother so loved. Again, thank you for your hospitality.

A heartfelt thank you from a recent couple's vacation.

Dear Reefs team,

We just came home from our trip to your resort. This was our second time visiting your incredible facility and once again we were awed and overwhelmed by the beauty and the atmosphere of your incredible hotel.

We were the random winner of the "Show Your Love" contest and I can't begin to express how needed and appreciated this trip was.

In the past 4 years my husband has undergone two stem cell transplants to fight his recurring cancer. As a result of the most recent transplant, he is now battling Graft vs. Host Disease (GVHD) which is basically his immune system rejecting the new cells. Daily he suffers from debilitating muscle cramping, fatigue, weakness, and other various side effects. But being the special man he is, one would never know the pain he suffers in silence.

As one can imagine, the difficulty of facing a life threatening illness, not once, not twice, but three times along with the unknown fear of what will happen to him if the GVHD progresses can put a huge strain on not only an individual but also on a couple. We are very fortunate that the extra costs associated with his illness have not been a huge burden on us financially, but there are certain things we have had to "tighten our belts" on doing. Vacationing is one of them. We would have never been able to afford a trip back to your resort had we not won this one.

The entire time we were at The Reefs, my husbands symptoms were far less than on a normal day at home. I think the stress-free week helped him tremendously. I know, it helped me! We just celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary two weeks ago and for all the stress we have been through in the past few years, romance and fun was certainly something we were losing. I'm very happy to say that the week we spent there has rekindled the flame and given us the strength to continue to fight his battle together. It has given us a beautiful memory that no matter what the future holds, I will always have.

Hopefully, his health will improve over the next year and we will see you next year for our 25th Anniversary!

So, once again. Thank you for choosing me as the random winner in the "Show Your Love" contest. We made many friends and had a weeks worth of incredible memories. It was an amazing week and we appreciated every minute of it.

Cup Match in Bermuda

Every year the Bermuda community enjoys a two day celebration of camping, boating, swimming and, most importantly, cricket.

But what exactly is the significance of Cup Match in Bermuda?

"In 1947 two official national public holidays were introduced and held annually on the Thursday and Friday closest to August 1. The first holiday, Cup Match, was renamed Emancipation Day in 1999 and continued the tradition of remembering the end of slavery. The second holiday, Somers Day, commemorated the arrival of Admiral Sir George Somers who colonized Bermuda in 1609. The two-day holiday became the annual two days of cricket for the cup – the Bermuda Cup Match.

"However, Cup Match is so much more than cricket. Emancipation Day and the emancipation of slavery symbolizes one of the most significant moments in Bermuda's history. A destination wedding at home

Surrounded by 21 family members and friends in the comfortable elegance of “home” at The Reefs Club, Ken and Kristie Lynch celebrated their love at a May 31 destination wedding. A weekend full of memorable family events and outings led up to the picture-perfect wedding day.

In regard to selecting a location for the couple’s nuptials, it was an easy decision. “What could be more special than our favorite place,” says Susan Hanover, mother-of-the-bride and owner at The Reefs Club. Susan and her husband Link began vacationing at The Reefs 13 years ago for their 25th wedding anniversary celebration – and now refer to it as their "home away from home."

Kristie and Ken became engaged in Bermuda on Kristie’s birthday on August 26, while vacationing with the family at The Reefs Club. All the staff collaborated with Ken for the surprise proposal, in which Ken presented Kristie with a family heirloom ring on bended knee during a horseback riding outing.

Nearly one year later, the couple returned to The Club and Bermuda for an understated, classic wedding with perfect Bermuda touches thanks to the help of wedding planner Kathleen Dodwell and the entire team at The Reefs. “The staff bent over backwards,” raved Susan. “We are indebted to the entire team for their meticulous attention to details.”

The wedding weekend began with a Friday night Welcome dinner on island. On Saturday, there was a private dinner party served poolside at The Club with a sumptuous buffet from Chef Philippe and a signature martini created just for the event. On Sunday, the group toured Bermuda by water with a family boat ride before Monday’s big event.

Dark clouds dispersed right before the Caso’s Point ceremony to reveal sunny skies overlooking the turquoise waters. A dinner reception followed at Coconuts. Susan exclaimed, “It was so beyond what we could have imagined.”

Wild Berries and Champagne Sabayon

A perfect complement to Chef Philippe's Sautéed Mushrooms on Toasted Brioche

Ingredients
1 pint mixed wild berries (domestic if wild are unavailable)
4 egg yolks
4 oz sugar
4 oz Champagne
4 oz Port
4 sprigs fresh mint

Directions
Wash berries delicately, dry softly in paper towel. Divide into four Martini glasses — or dessert bowls. In the top of a double boiler whisk the egg yolks actively over heat, add the sugar, then the liquids. Keep whisking until you have a consis-tent heavy mixture. When ready to serve, pour the warm Sabayon over the berries. Dress with mint.

Sautéed Mushrooms on Toasted Brioche

One of Chef Philippe's creations that's perfect for a balmy summer evening. Try with his Wild berries and Champagne sabayon!

Ingredients
1 lb of your favourite mushrooms
4 oz unsalted butter
1 shallot peeled and minced
salt and pepper to taste
juice of one lemon
1 tbs fresh thyme chopped fine
4 slices of brioche bread toasted
1 tbs parsley chopped fine

Directions
Wash and dry the mushrooms. If they are large cut in two. Melt the butter in a sauté pan to a brown stage, add mushrooms, then add chopped shallot. Sauté quickly. Season to taste. Squeeze lemon juice and sprinkle chopped thyme over the mushrooms. Shake pan and serve hot on toast. Dress with chopped parsley.

Looking back at Bermuda night 2009 at Fenway

The Boston Red Sox hosted a Bermuda Night at Fenway in 2009 part of their relationship with the Bermuda Department of Tourism. And this year there will be two Bermuda Nights!

The first will take place on June 17 when they compete against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the second on August 23 against the Seattle Mariners.

There will be a Bermuda tourism representative at both nights to throw out the ceremonial first pitch and a Bermudian artist sing the National Anthem. And the Gombeys will be dancing and sharing some Bermudian culture to Americans.

As you know, Tim Finnegan was the winner of our Show Your Love contest. But you may not know that he generously gave his free stay to his parents, Jack and Barbara Finnegan.

Jack and Barbara Finnegan honeymooned at The Reefs and so did his children. A true family honeymoon tradition. Even 42 years later, The Finnegan's still talk about the fond memories they had at The Reefs. So Tim entered his story in the hopes he could send his parents back to Bermuda and The Reefs to enjoy a vacation that was very much deserved.

Show Your Love Contest Winners

Over the years, The Reefs has shared in many special events and memories with our guests. Such memories are also now being created by the owners at The Reefs Club.

There have been proposals in the sand, “I Do’s” on Caso’s Point, anniversaries, birthdays or just a memorable family getaway. One thing is clear – The Reefs and Bermuda are the perfect place for love.

In February, we reached out to all fans of The Reefs and Bermuda and asked them to submit their fondest memories on the island. More than 600 stories were submitted. Some made us laugh, some made us cry, but all warmed our hearts.

It was difficult, but the lot was narrowed down to the top 7. You can read each of the top seven experiences here.

We then opened the contest up to the public, asking anyone to vote on which experience was their favorite. More than 3,000 votes later, Tim Finnegan's story, Family Honeymoon Tradition, received more than one-third of the votes.

Both Tim and Audrey, a randomly selected voter, will be packing their bags for Bermuda’s best hotel for a 6-day, 5-night vacation for two at The Reefs. Congratulations!

Good News after Hurricane Bill

Thanks for all your calls and emails over the weekend wishing us the best as Hurricane Bill churned toward Bermuda. It is heart-warming to know we have so many dear friends.

Hurricane Bill was a Category 2 storm as it passed some 170 miles to the west of Bermuda on Saturday morning. We received gale force winds, plenty of rain and waves as high as 25 feet at times.

The Reefs received minimal damage as a result of the storm, as these photos taken on Sunday afternoon can attest. The waves did take out some of the railings and flooring at Coconuts on the Beach. Consequently, Coconuts is currently closed for repairs and expected to reopen tomorrow.

As typical during storms, Mother Nature did take away some of our beach. Here in Bermuda we have learned that Mother Nature removes our pink sand to give it a good cleaning and will replenish the beach soon. The extra seaweed left from the storm will soon be raked and removed by our beach crew.

While Hurricane Bill had the potential to be a dangerous storm, we are very pleased to report that we are doing well at The Reefs and should be back to normal when Coconuts reopens tomorrow.

Chef Philippe Joins The Reefs

Philippe Haddad, most recently of Atlanta’s Country Club of the South, will lead the culinary team at The Reefs as Executive Chef, infusing the dining options with international flair.

Originally from Belgium, Haddad has garnered a following from food & wine events across the U.S. His extensive background includes stints at St. James Club Resort Antigua, L’Escoffier Restaurant of The Beverly Hilton Hotel, the Abbey Restaurant in Atlanta, and his own namesake, Philippe’s Bistro, also of Atlanta.

Haddad began his culinary journey in his native Belgium where he trained with Master Chef Eddie Van Maele. He then cooked in various restaurants in Belgium, France and England before moving to the United States in 1983. Since that time he has worked with restaurants from coast to coast.

The Story of the Sandcastle

The Bogus family of Williamsburg, Va recently stayed at The Reefs and built an impressively large sandcastle on the beach just beneath Coconuts Restaurant. For 20 years it has been their family tradition to build a sandcastle on each beach vacation.

It was the family’s first ever visit to Bermuda. They had such a wonderful time they are already planning a return visit to The Reefs in October. History buffs, the Bogus’s enjoyed learning more about Bermuda’s 400th Anniversary and the linkages between the island and their home in the Historic Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.

Jamison (Jamie) Munno, the snorkel-pro you see pictured below, recently visited The Reefs with her parents and younger brother, her grandparents and her Aunt Becky Osborne. A true multi-generational family vacation!

Becky, a teacher from New York, wanted to vacation at The Reefs during her spring break and her family decided to join her. The entire Osborne family has vacationed at The Reefs 5 times as a group and a handful of times separately.

This was Jamie's second visit to The Reefs and her younger 3-year-old brother Zach's first visit. Jamie and Zach loved waking up every morning and going down to the beach and running around and playing in the ocean!

Ostrich and Alligator at The Reefs?

A recent wine tasting dinner at The Reefs on May 1st featured some rather exotic menu items including ostrich and alligator!

Matt Lane, the Penfolds director of wine education was in Bermuda to promote the Penfolds Grange winery in Australia.

The menu was organized after the winemakers were on island for the event. That just shows that the chefs at The Reefs sure are ready to prepare an unusual menu with their very innovative ideas!

Junior Chefs visit The Reefs

On Saturday, April 4th, more than 150 young people ages 10-15 came together to share their common interest in cooking at the Jr. Chef Kids Culinary Conference. The only event of its kind in the world, the Kids Culinary Conference promotes the practice and importance of making healthy food choices. Presented in a kid-focused environment, these sessions are designed to:

Help kids make smart food choices
Teach them independence and self-sufficiency
Build their confidence
Advance their culinary knowledge

Jr. Chef Central is a non-profit culinary program for young people that uses food to excite, educate and connect kids to their family, peers & community.

The Dissipated Eight Sing for Their Supper

To the delight of guests, The Dissipated Eight, Middlebury College’s premier all-male a cappella group, stopped by for an evening of entertainment at The Reefs. This is part of a traditional spring time ritual in Bermuda where a cappella groups from many of the most prestigious colleges and universities descend upon Bermuda for a little fun and entertainment.

Group members generally stay in homes of Bermuda residents and sing at local hotels and restaurants in exchange for meals. It’s a great vacation for members of the a cappella groups and a unique experience for Bermuda visitors.

2009 T+L 500 Award

In their seventh annual "T+L 500", Travel + Leisure’s international team of reporters and editors checked out the 500 highest-rated hotels, resorts, inns, and lodges in their World’s Best survey and identified what makes them special.

The Reefs was ranked the #3 hotel in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas, up from #9 last year.

The editors of Condé Nast Traveler have named The Reefs as one of the World’s Best Places to Stay for its fifth year in a row on their 2009 Gold List in the January issue on newsstands now.

Of more than 700 hotels worldwide selected from the 2008 readers’ survey results, The Reefs was the only Bermuda hotel to make the list.

Our Youngest Repeaters

The Fatta family of Gloucester, MA enjoys The Reefs so much, they return each year and have for the past 15.

Joe and Carol Fatta bring their twin sons, Nick and Kyle, with them every time. Having been to The Reefs each year since first grade, Nick and Kyle Fatta just may be our youngest multiple repeaters yet!

As all Reefs guests know, we offer wonderful family vacations. A few years ago the Fatta's even invited Joe's family to join them at The Reefs to help celebrate Joe's birthday.

Carol says The Reefs is "soooooo easy to get to from Boston Logan Airport." Less than a 2 hour flight and you're in sunny Bermuda. Perhaps that’s part of the reason they return year after year.

JetBlue Upgrades Plane for New York Flight

Here's some good news for Bermuda fans from New York - JetBlue Airways will increase its seat capacity by 50 percent between Bermuda and New York for part of the first quarter of 2009.

The added capacity for the Bermuda-JFK route takes place from February 12 and will run until April, when JetBlue Airways will fly an Airbus 320 instead of the Embraer 190.

The Airbus 320 aircraft carries 150 passengers; the Embraer 190 carries 100 passengers. In total it will make an extra 3,500 seats available over the course of the initiative.

So, escape the cold and head to Bermuda. We have some very enticing specials to make your vacation at The Reefs even better whether you prefer a short break from the cold or a romantic escape.

New Currency for 2009

In early 2009, the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) will release $1 million worth of bank notes with a whole new look and feel - the first redesign of the Bermudian currency since the Bermuda dollar was issued in 1970.

The new bank notes will use of bold colors and local scenes, flora and fauna. Click here to see the new bank notes.

The notes also will carry new security features including:

a watermark of a hibiscus flower and an electrolyte in the shape of a sail boat
see-through features which will be unique to each denomination
serial numbers increasing in size
an iridescent band on the $20, $50 and $100 bills
a latent image

No longer will the Queen's portrait be the main image on the notes - it will be moved to the front left corner of the notes after the BMA was given approval by Buckingham Palace and the UK Post Office.

When you come to Bermuda next year you will be able to see the new Bermudian currency for yourself!

Want to know why The Reefs staff is so special? It's because they work so well as a team to ensure each guest receives excellent service.

This teamwork was never so evident as when a photographer stopped by to take a picture of Derek Bean, Assistant Maitre d' of Ocean Echo to put on the hotel's web site.

When the photographer explained what he wanted, Derek looked around and called the entire staff over saying, "Come on! We're going to be famous!" He insisted everyone be included as each staff member works hard to create a wonderful dining experience.

Bermuda's Best

The Reefs has once again been named as one of the World’s best hotels.

The Forbes Traveler 400 list was first published two years ago. Rather than surveying hundreds of thousands of online travelers to make the final selections, a panel of 79 luxury travel experts suggested their 800 favorite hotels, which was then narrowed down to 400.

Among the 400 World’s Best Hotels, The Reefs was the only Bermuda property to make the list. Our long-time staff and beautiful beachfront location are two aspects of the hotel that helped us earn the valued rating.

Staff Cafeteria

As a result of construction on The Reefs Club and improvements to the hotel, it was decided to develop a cafeteria especially for The Reefs staff.

On September 15 The Reefs’ staff cafeteria was officially unveiled.

On that particular day, the longest term staff member in attendance was Mervin, having been at The Reefs since 1981. He was given the privilege of cutting the ribbon to the new cafeteria.

Here are several of the long-term staff members at the opening of the staff cafeteria: Hugh, Maureen, Barb, Mervin, Pat, Cynthia, Marlene and Mr. Dodwell.

Three Generations of Dodwells

As Reefs guests know, many of our staff have been at the hotel for years, and some of the staff's children have grown up to work at The Reefs, too.

Owner David Dodwell's son, David Dodwell, Jr. has returned to Bermuda after getting his master's degree in hospitality management to work at The Reefs.

The Reefs' family news is so popular, that a picture of the three generations of Dodwell's made the cover of Travel World News! How about that!

The Reverse Vacation

Most of the time when people think of a vacation they picture somewhere inviting and beautiful like The Reefs. But occasionally people need to take their vacations elsewhere.

Originally hailing from Colorado, Managing Director Ben Tutt returned home for a family vacation. While he was there he met up with long time Reefs repeaters George and Lisa Tousey.

The Touseys are both multi-generational repeaters of the hotel from Frisco, Colorado where they run several restaurants, one of which is Farley’s.

This just shows how close The Reefs family is – not only do they get together in Bermuda, but also Colorado.

Long-Time Repeaters Help Initiate New Restaurants

Jerry and Susan Waller, long-time Reefs repeaters from New Jersey have just visited The Reefs and give “two thumbs up” on our new restaurants, Ocean Echo and Royston’s.

Having visited well over 30 times, the Wallers have without a doubt witnessed The Reefs evolve over the years and were very eager to experience the new restaurants. They planned their visit well, staying long enough to enjoy every dish on Royston’s menu. “We have tried everything, and love it all,” said Jerry Waller. “Susan is particularly fond of the Beef Wellington and I enjoy the Halibut.”

The Reefs Family Grows

As many of The Reefs’ guests know, we pride ourselves for our strong sense of family. Some of you have been visiting us for years, and several staff members have been with us for decades! The staff’s children have come to work at The Reefs as well, further expanding The Reefs family.

So, we are happy to announce that President David Dodwell, who has been with The Reefs for 35 years, continues this tradition. His son, David Dodwell Jr., recently joined our team as the Director of Rooms. You may have met David Jr. when he was playing on the beach as a child or working in various departments as summer jobs.

In recent years, he has worked at hotels in Boston, California and Oregon, and spent two years at 9 Beaches here in Bermuda. He recently completed his master’s degree in hospitality management from the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, and we are sure that the frigid winters in upstate New York played a role in his decision to return to Bermuda!

David Jr. and his wife have relocated to Bermuda with their three-month-old baby boy, William Broderick Dodwell. They could not think of a better place to raise their son than with The Reefs family, and we are sure you will see Will playing on the beach like his father did 30 years ago!

MAP Mystery Solved

Have you ever wondered why we describe our rates as MAP or BP? MAP, or Modified American Plan, is how the Europeans have described American hotel rates since the 18th century.

The first American hotels, successors to the early inns, differed from their European prototypes by charging a fixed fee for food and lodging (American plan). The modern hotel in America dates from the early days of railroad travel, when modest hostelries become more spacious and efficient to accommodate the greater number of people traveling by rail. Hotels were built near railroads and offered a full day's meals with the lodging; hence, the rates were named the "American Plan" by the Europeans. For many years $1.00 per day was the accepted price!

The Modified American Plan (also called "Half Board") typically covers breakfast and either lunch or dinner. That descriptor continues today throughout the hotel industry worldwide.

Our hotel rates include breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner, and are called the MAP as is the tradition. On occasion we offer BP or Breakfast Plan, which includes breakfast only. So now you know!

60th Anniversary at The Reefs

Many of our guests have visited year after year, witnessing how The Reefs has evolved. Some guests have even been visiting The Reefs since we first opened in 1947.

Robert and Marian Fortney from North Little Rock, Arkansas celebrated their honeymoon here in our first year of operations. After 60 wonderful years of marriage, they decided to return to The Reefs to celebrate their anniversary!

On their last night they enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Coconuts. When they returned to their room they were surprised by a celebratory bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries!
